This hammock has a heavier weight than several other hammocks I have tested, so if you are planning to take this hiking I would take this into consideration as EVERY bit of weight is something to consider when you are packing your equipment. The straps need to be longer as we had several problems trying to find trees which would work so we could get the carabiners hooked. As far as the fabric, it is a parachute type material which is standard on most outdoor hammocks and stores in a pocket located on the side of the hammock, which you can use to store items while the hammock is in use.
